5 Herbal Hair Oils You Can Make for Hair Growth and Shine

Long Hair

The loss of hair, dullness as well as the slow rate of hair growth- does that sound familiar? We have all encountered these issues at some moment in time. Our hair has occasionally deserved a tincture of extra love and care with all the chemical-based hair products in the market today.

However, here is the good news, the nature has supplied our kitchen and garden with natural goodies that our grandmothers trusted by. I can still recall how my grandmother would sit on her little tin box of oils adding herbs in it and massaging my hair. It did not matter a lot to me at the time. However, I have now learned to like those bare-footed customs.

Therefore, today I will tell you 5 simple herbal hair oil-recipes that you can prepare at home to have strong, shiny and healthy hair. The oils are chemical-free, wholly natural and they are really nourishing.

 1. Coconut Oil and Curry Leaves

Coconut & Curry Leaves

What is good about it:

Curry leaves contain a lot of nutrients, which aid in the prevention of loss of hair and growing new hair. Coconut oil is an intense moisturizer and it is suitable in every kind of hair.

 Ingredients:

a few fresh Curry leaves
Coconut Oil

Making:

Melt some coconut oil in a pan. Add curry leaves and allow them to crackle some few minutes (they will darken to green). Put away the fire and allow oil to cool. Strain it off and bottle in glass.

Use:
Apply two times a week to your scalp. Soak it over night or an hour and rinse.

It is the oil my mom continues to produce in the house. It has a heavenly scent and actually works well in lessening breakages.

2. Sesame oil and Hibiscus

Seseme OIl & Hibiscus

What is good about it:
The Hibiscus flowers and leaves have been noted to enhance hair thickness, provide sheen and guard other hair problems such as premature greying. Sesame oil makes the roots strong and feeds dry scalp.

Ingredients:

Five to six pieces of hibiscus flowers (fresh or dried)
some hibiscus foliage
1 cup sesame oil

The preparation:
Finely pound the hibiscus leaves and flowers. Put the paste in a pan with heat sesame oil. Boil on low heat a couple of minutes then remove. Strain and chill.

Use:
Apply it once/twice a week prior to shampoo it. With circular motions of your palms on your head massage it gently.
I applied this oil when I was in my college years as my hair appeared to be very thin and dull. And within weeks it restored my natural volume!

3. Mustard oil and Fenugreek (Methi)

Mustard Oil & Fenugreek

Why it is good:
Fenugreek seeds are rich in protein and they also control dandruff and hair fall. Mustard oil cleans the scalp and works on the blood circulation.

 Ingredients:

2 tbs cut down fenugreek seeds
1 cup mustard oil

How to prepare:
Take fenugreek seeds and dry-roast them till they get slightly brown. Grind them roughly and put them in mustard oil. Boil the oil at a temperature of 5-7 min and allow it to cool. Tension and reserves.

Use:
Warm your oil and massage it on your head. Keep it one hour or over night. Shampoo using mild shampoo.
This oil has a quite strong smell, and the results are worth it, believe me. My grandmother would say, "A little stink, lots of glimmer"!

4. Amla Oil and Olive Oil

Amla Oil & Olive Oil

What is good about it:
Probably one of the most potent sources of hair health is amla (Indian gooseberry). It increases hair growth and decreases greying. Olive oil is intensively conditioning and shiny.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoon powdered amla (or small pieces of it)
1 cup olive-oil.
Making
When fresh amla is used, chop them and dry them under the sun. Heat olive oil and add in the amla pieces or powder. Cook on low heat, 10 minutes. Chill, press, freeze.

Use:
To prevent hair fall and to get the hair in a better texture apply twice a week.
I tested this blend in winter when my scalp was so dry. It conjured!

5. Neem and Castor Oil

Neem & Castor Oil

Why it is good:
It applies well with itchy scalp and dandruff with neem. Castor oil is dense and luscious that is ideal when it comes to stimulating hair growth and curbing hair loss.

Ingredients:

Some new neem leaves
1/2 castor oil
1/2 cup of coconut oil (diluted)
Making:
Pound neem leaves in a paste. Warm up the castor and coconut oil and put in the neem paste. Simmer it up on a low heat for some 5 minutes. Put under strain and bottle.

Use:
Apply this oil only once in a week in case of dandruffs or inflammation of the scalp. Do not forget to shampoo thoroughly, because castor oil could be adhesive.
This one I also even recommend to my cousin that experienced continuous itching of the scalp, and after three applications, she felt quite a difference.
Last Hair Oiling Tips
Apply the oil a little warmed up-it aids penetration of oil into the scalp.
Rub with fingertips up and down on a circular motion.
Remember to take care of the ends of your hair as well, they deserve your attention as well!
If you are going to keep it overnight then cover your head with a towel or shower cap.

Be regular! Herbal oils are time consuming though the results are permanent and natural.

Wrapping Up

Hair oiling is not only beauty tradition, this is how you take care of yourself. Do not hesitate to take out 10-15 minutes two times a week and invest in a simple oil massage which can not only do wonders to your hair but also to your mind.

They are also cheaply made, homemade and do not contain any harsh chemicals like the commercially produced herbal oils that are used. They also contain the goodness of the generations of Indian homes.
